Grant Noble is one of our most talented, younger Newport shredders and shapers who we've had the pleasure of watching grow into the craftsman and surfer he is today. Grant is unique in so many ways but what's instantly striking is his skill level surfing all types of boards from stubby twins to logs and everything in between. This mastery of surfing as a medium that's not subjugated by one specific surfboard design gives Grant a deeper understanding of the craft and allows him to explore a wide range of diverse designs to cater to his broad community. This democratic approach is why Grant can so seamlessly make you a surfboard that feels like it's merely an extension of your body, something so comfortable and familiar that it's as if he was able to see what you needed better than yourself.
Drawn to his pedigree as a surfer, it seemed natural to formulate the Case Study around Grant surfing his own boards; however, his humble and altruistic perspective insisted that shooting with friends was more of a priority in that Grant wanted to show that he can make surfboards for everyone rather than boards that just work for himself. This modesty is also reflected in Grant's path as someone who currently makes a living from surfing. Too often it seems that Southern California surf culture fixates an overbearing perspective that professional surfers can be designed through a rigorous algorithm of youth athletics. Grant talks about being a kid and doing kid stuff: skating, riding dirt bikes, and having a good time. It wasn't until he was 12 that he delved into surfing and even later that the ideas of competitions and careers would be considered. A good sense of humor and lightheartedness makes everything feel more comfortable and Grant really translates this from his personality into his functional art sculptures we call surfboards.
We encourage you to come meet Grant in person at our shop on Friday October 18th, 2024. We'll be displaying his quiver of 12 boards - six new boards and six demos - for you to get your hands on here in Newport Beach. The evening will be accompanied by free beers and live music from the Real Big Bad. We will also be extending some of Grant's boards to Japan for a board demo in Chiba on Sunday, November 3rd with the exact location to be determined by the swell and conditions closer to the demo day.
