9'6" Gato Heroi Californian (Polyola Blank)
Polyola blanks are made from 2/3 recycled content. There are two main ingredients to blow their blanks: polyol and isocyanate. Their polyol is based on an 80%+ recycled organic compound that they source from the packaging industry. The isocyanate is a chemical compound which is made from 60% plant based material giving it a naturally tan tint. This guarantees that at least 2/3 of their blanks are not based on virgin fossil fuels like traditional surfboard blanks.
As for the Californian model, the Californian is a hot dogger's delight that stays true to Robin Kegel's shaping philosophy. This model has the wide point set just slightly back from center and keep a fairly full width through the nose and tail. Look carefully at the deck and you'll notice a very subtle step deck dropping down about two thirds of the way up towards the nows. The bottom contours start out flatter in the nose and progress into a light roll with a slight hint of rolled vee towards the tail. The rocker profile has a healthy amount of kick in the nose and tail and the curve of the rocker is pushed forward for the nose and backward for the tail. The rail foil is slightly boxier and forgiving than other Gato Heroi models. This is an excellent all around log, if we had to categorize any of RK's models as noseriders, this would be the most "noserider-forward" model we've surfed.
