Daydream Denim was built around a simple idea: create the vintage jeans we're always looking for.
Our inspiration was a beautifully preserved pair of vintage 501’s, a silhouette that has influenced generations of denim makers and remains one of the greatest fits ever designed. Rather than copy the past, we refined that timeless shape with subtle adjustments to create a fit that feels just as natural today as it did decades ago.
But great denim starts long before the pattern.
That's why we partnered with one of Japan's most respected denim factories, trusted by leading heritage brands around the world. Every pair is the result of generations of craftsmanship from spinning yarn and rope-dyeing indigo to weaving, sewing, washing, and finishing. Each step is handled by specialists dedicated to perfecting their craft.
Japanese denim has earned its reputation because it values patience over production and craftsmanship over shortcuts. Many of its makers spend years studying original vintage garments, carefully recreating not only how they looked when new, but how they soften, fade, and develop character through decades of wear.
For Daydream Denim, we were also fortunate to secure Kaihara Japanese selvedge denim—one of the world's most sought-after mills. Premium selvedge fabrics often carry lead times exceeding 18 months, making this fabric both exceptionally rare and an important part of what makes these jeans so special.
Unlike modern denim woven on high-speed looms, selvedge denim is produced slowly on traditional shuttle looms. This slower process creates a denser weave with natural texture, incredible durability, and the ability to age beautifully over time. Every pair develops its own unique fade pattern, becoming more personal with every wear.
Daydream Denim is available in two distinct finishes.
Rines Wash: preserves the deep indigo color while lightly washing the fabric to minimize shrinkage. It offers the purest experience of the denim, allowing each owner to create years of authentic fades that are entirely their own.
Vintage Wash: undergoes an extensive finishing process designed to recreate the look and feel of denim that's been loved for over a decade. After washing, skilled artisans hand-create every whisker, fade, and abrasion before applying specialized finishing techniques that enhance seam puckering and subtle color variation. The result isn't simply distressed denim—it's an authentic vintage character that feels earned rather than manufactured.
The details follow the same philosophy.
Different stitch colors were selected for each wash after studying vintage examples from different eras. The hardware remains understated, true to classic workwear construction. We chose a traditional button fly instead of a zipper, honoring the heritage of the original 501. And instead of adding a leather waistband patch, we left only the stitched outline—a subtle nod to vintage jeans whose patches disappeared after decades of wear, leaving behind nothing but the marks of time.
Daydream Denim wasn't designed to imitate vintage jeans.

- What makes Japanese denim so special?
Japanese denim is respected worldwide for much more than just its fabric or construction.
Every step of the process, from spinning the yarn and dyeing the indigo to weaving, sewing, and washing is handled by skilled artisans who specialize in their craft. Their dedication to detail is what makes Japanese denim unique.
Japan also has one of the world's deepest cultures of studying vintage denim. Makers carefully analyze original garments and strive to recreate not only their appearance, but also the way they age and develop character over time.
Rather than focusing on mass production, Japanese denim is built on craftsmanship, patience, and attention to detail.
2. Tell us about the factory where Daydream denim is made?
The factory producing these jeans is trusted by some of the most respected vintage inspired brands in Japan and around the world.
What makes them unique is their ability to design every pair by working backwards from the finished result. They carefully consider how the denim will change after washing and aging, then adjust the pattern, stitching, thread, and construction accordingly.
Their expertise in washing, dyeing, distressing, and vintage finishing is among the best in Japan and thus the world.
Another special part of this project was being able to use Kaihara selvedge denim. Premium Japanese selvedge denim is in extremely high demand worldwide, and some fabrics have lead times of over 18 months. Being able to use this fabric is something we're incredibly grateful for and adds real value to our denim.
3. Why does selvedge denim improve quality
Selvedge denim is woven slowly on traditional shuttle looms.
Because of the slower weaving process, the fabric develops a natural texture and softness that modern high speed looms simply can't replicate.
Over time, it fades beautifully and develops unique character that reflects the person wearing it.
Although it's much less efficient to produce, this slower process is exactly why selvedge denim is considered one of the highest quality denims in the world.
4. What are the differences between the two washes (the raw denim vs faded denim)?
The Rinse Wash is lightly washed to stabilize shrinkage while preserving the rich indigo color of the denim. It allows you to experience the fabric in its purest form and create your own fade pattern over years of wear.
The Vintage Wash, on the other hand, goes through an extensive finishing process. The denim is first washed down to resemble jeans that have been worn for approximately 10 to 15 years. From there, skilled artisans hand create every whisker, fade, and abrasion one pair at a time. Special finishing techniques are then applied to enhance the puckering along the seams before the jeans receive a final wash with a subtle warm tint to blend the colors naturally.
Our goal wasn't simply to make distressed denim, it was to create a pair that feels as authentic and naturally aged as a true vintage original.
5. What was the inspiration sample for the fit?
The silhouette is based on a well preserved vintage Levi's 501.
Even decades after its original release, the 501 remains one of the greatest denim silhouettes ever created and continues to inspire brands around the world.
We wanted to respect that timeless shape while making subtle adjustments so it feels natural and comfortable for today's wearer.
Instead of searching endlessly for the perfect vintage pair, we wanted to create what we believe is the ideal vintage 501 brand new.
6. What makes the hardware (buttons) special?
None of the details are flashy, but every one of them has a purpose.
First, we chose different stitch colors for the Rinse Wash and Vintage Wash versions. Each color was selected after studying vintage examples from different eras to match the character of each finish.
The buttons and rivets are intentionally understated, staying true to classic vintage construction rather than drawing attention to themselves.
The front closure uses a traditional button fly instead of a zipper, something Kyle and Becca felt strongly about.
Finally, we decided not to attach a leather brand patch to the waistband. Instead, we left only the rectangular stitch marks. On many true vintage jeans, years of wear eventually cause the leather patch to fall off, leaving behind only the stitching. We found that detail incredibly beautiful, a quiet reminder of time and wear and wanted to capture that feeling from the very beginning.
