"‘The Real Hawaii’ captures two pivotal moments in my life. The top image is a
Hi-8 video frame grab taken a year before my brother’s accident, a moment of
innocent normalcy before everything changed. The bottom image was taken a
few weeks after my first morning waking up in Molokai, where Cap was making
breakfast. I snapped it with a disposable 35mm waterproof camera.
This painting is a visual diary of a transformative journey. When my brother
Jacob fell from a four-story balcony we spent months in the ICU. Amidst the
chaos, a trip to Molokai offered a strange solace. We landed in 'the real Hawaii,'
surrounded by humility and resilience. From praying over fast food to staying in
a shack that once housed a fugitive, every experience was surreal and
grounding.
Cap’s breakfast marked a new day in a place where the stars felt close enough
to touch. This painting is a testament to resilience and the unexpected beauty
that emerges from turmoil. It reflects the serenity amidst chaos and the
moments that shape us.
