6’8” Wegener Alaia

This is what surfing looked like before Western Culture... Ancient Polynesian Island sliders rode waves together in egalitarian fashion and the Alaia was more or less the first performance board. Jon Wegner is here to shine light on the beauty of 1500 AD shredding by keeping the Alaia outline true to its original design but he uses a lighter wood and incorporates some modern design refinements. Rather than the heavy Koa or Redwood that would've been used to make these boards over 500 years ago, Wegner uses a light weight and fast growing paulownia wood as the base for his Alaias which gives the board a great amount of flex and allows the design to maintain a very flat rocker profile. The flat rocker profile in conjunction with the finless design allows the Alaia to trim at ultra high speeds with almost no resistance. The flex allows the board to bend with the wave and mold to the form of the face. Paulownia wood is also a great wood for repelling water so the board stays as light as possible and doesn't require glassing. The bottom contour is rolled in the nose and transitions into a tri-plane hull about a quarter of the way down from the nose. The rails are knifey and thin with a hard edge running most of the length of the board. This is a very difficult board to surf and an even more difficult board to paddle but the patient wave slider will be rewarded greatly once they've put in time to understanding the Alaia. This may be the future of surfing, producing surfboards is highly toxic for board builders and our planet, it is not sustainable at current levels and is becoming more and more noticed by government agencies; for example, the EPA shut down of Clark Foam in 2005. It is worth thinking about a future with less toxic materials.
