Onyx Coffee Labs Ethiopia Bensa Bombe Kenya-Washed
Story: This coffee in itself is the embodiment of experimenting with how the nuances of processing affect a coffee. In Ethiopia, washed coffees are fermented underwater. In Kenya, they are dry fermented. Catalyst Trade decided to experiment and dry ferment this coffee Kenya style. This led to a more fruit forward coffee with the same tea-like qualities seen in washed Ethiopian coffee.
Roaster’s Notes: Grapefruit, Hibiscus, Guava, Black Tea
Our Take: This coffee drinks like a normal washed Ethiopian but with more fruit on the tongue. We think the hibiscus and black tea notes are spot on!
Roaster Background: Onyx Coffee Lab, based out of Arkansas, is widely known as the industry leader in transparent and ethical green coffee buying. They don’t operate on payment contracts; everything is paid for 50% up front and 50% when it lands. They freely share what they pay per pound green and what they internally score each coffee at.
They’re also known for tacking on extra for producers doing good in their communities to help support those initiatives such as building schools and infrastructure.
